Welcome to the Publication Scheme for The Institute of Optometry as required by the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
Introduction
This publication scheme is a complete guide to the information routinely made available to the public by The Institute of Optometry. It is a description of the information about our NHS services that we make publicly available. It will be reviewed at regular intervals and we will monitor its effectiveness.
How much does it cost?
The publications are free unless otherwise indicated. Where information is provided at cost, the charges will be calculated as set out in Class 7.

Classes of Information
All NHS Information at The Institute of Optometry is held, retained and destroyed within NHS guidelines. Our commitment to publish information excludes any information that can be legitimately withheld under the exemptions set out in the NHS Openness Code or Freedom of Information Act 2000. From 2005, individual Classes are subject to exemptions, the main reasons being the protection of commercial interests and personal information under the Data Protection Act 1998. This Scheme has been written in accordance with those exemptions. The information on this scheme is grouped into the following categories:

2: Clinical Governance at The Institute of Optometry
Clinical governance is the framework through which The Institute of Optometry is accountable for continuously improving the quality of our services and safeguarding our high standards of care by creating an environment of excellence in which clinical care flourishes.
The framework has six key areas:
- Clinical Audit
The Audit of equipment, patient access, clinical procedures, clinical outcomes. The analysis of these audits with management strategies in response to them and the re-evaluation by regular re-audit.
- Risk Management Strategy
The reduction of risk to both patients and practitioners by the implementation of health and safety policies, responding to infection control procedures and clinical risk reduction strategies
- Patient Survey
Patient survey to allow us to respond to the needs of the patients and to monitor and evaluate access to care, cares quality and care delivery.
- Staff Performance Review, Development and Life Long Learning
Staff development programmes and the encouragement of life long learning through in house and external training events. Regular performance reviews.
- Resource Management Strategy
To manage clinical and non-clinical resources effectively to ensure care is not compromised by resource issues, be these personnel, clinical facilities or non-clinical requirements.
- Information Management Policy
To ensure excellence in clinical record keeping with links to clinical audit, and to ensure data protection policies and protocols are in place.
3: Our services
The Institute of Optometry provides free NHS eye tests for those who are eligible. You may also be entitled to vouchers that can be used against the purchase of glasses or contact lenses if you require them. To find out if you are eligible please click here or ask for details at reception.

5: Financial and funding information
For every eye test performed on behalf of the NHS, The Institute of Optometry receives a set fee of £20.70, which is reviewed annually. This goes towards expenses such as optometrist and support staff salaries, equipment costs and other overheads.
If you are not eligible for the NHS eye test, or you require one of our services that is not covered by the NHS eye test, please contact us for details of our current charges.
6: Regular publications and information for the public
A complete set of information about optical and ocular conditions, eye tests, glasses and contact lenses can be found on a number of websites including www.college-optometrists.org.
Some of this information is also available in patient leaflets. These are available in our patient waiting area.
7: Complaints
If you have a complaint about any of our products or services, we recommend that you first discuss and problems with the practice manager. If the matter cannot be resolved in this way or you are unsatisfied with the response you receive please contact the Chief Executive.

9: This publication scheme
In this class we will publish any changes we make to this publication scheme, the criteria on which our information management policies are made and a referral point for all enquiries regarding information management generally in practice. We will also publish any proposed changes or additions to publications already available.
For the most part, we will only charge for hard copies, or copies onto media. Charges are as follows and will be reviewed regularly.
